It’s well known that the American university system developed with German models in mind. These days the German higher educational system has been emulating some of the ways of the American system—and experiencing some of the same problems. A partnership between German scholar Johannes Voeltz and American Russell Berman produced a conference, “Onward, Upward, and Out” (which is an imprecise translation of a niftier German phrase) that meditated on this trans-atlantic double-cross.
